SDF Community Garden Open House

Join Us for a Community Garden Open House!

Come see how our garden grows! SFC recently celebrated the official opening of our JP’s Peace, Love & Happiness Teaching Garden and the St. David’s Foundation Community Garden at our new home--this Saturday from 10-12, the community gardeners would like to invite all our friends and neighbors for an open house. Come learn how you can get involved in the garden and enjoy garden tours, kids’ activities, refreshments, and a sneak peak of upcoming SFC gardening classes. Email Ryan with any questions »

Bowl of Peaches

New Crops & Market Events!

It’s a whole new season at SFC farmers’ markets! We’re seeing the first juicy peaches, ripe tomatoes, and crunchy cucumbers, as well as green beans, summer squash, peppers, eggplant, and sweet corn from our farmers, and we have recipes and inspiration boards to celebrate the season. New vendors are coming on every week—at the Downtown market, take a leisurely walk around the shady stretch of Fifth Street to find Urban Roots, Tecolote Farm, Fruitful Hill Farm, and more. We’re thrilled to welcome Tecolote Farm back to both Sunset Valley and the Downtown markets as well as new vendors El Cruz Ranch—they’ll be bringing goat, beef, herbs, greens, turkey, chicken, and duck eggs to Sunset Valley. Head over to the Taste the Place tent at both Saturday markets to try The Happy Kitchen’s simple-to-make and oh-so-delicious parsley paste—a great recipe for pairing with tomatoes, squash, potatoes, and grilled meats.

PREPARE

Strawberry Mint Granita

Strawberry Mint Granita

Swimming holes, fireflies, school-free mornings, and frozen treats: summer is here! Too-sweet Sno Cones and store-bought ice cream might be filled with questionable ingredients, though, and aren't always the healthiest choice. When everyone screams for ice cream, reach instead for this cool, homemade icy strawberry granita, made with a few simple ingredients--no special equipment required! Bright green flecks of cool, fresh mint add an element of herbal interest and lemon brightens all the flavors. Feel free to increase the lemon juice if you'd like more tartness, and be sure to stir in the ice crystals as the granita freezes for a smooth, velvety texture. This isn't a recipe to save for a special occasion--besides freezing time, the only thing that goes faster than making it is eating it! Read more and get the recipe »»
