Companion Plants in the Summer Garden

You know about the birds and the bees, right? When planning a garden, it's important to think of the entire ecosystem that you'll be creating. You want to provide food for the top of the food chain (that's you), but also support the many players that give life to the whole, from plants that supply nutrients and microorganisms for soil health to blooms that provide food and support to pollinators. When we create a natural balance in the garden, we find growing organically is easier than we might imagine. As summer gets hotter and we take a break from planting vegetables and fruit, it's a great time to think about growing some of these companion plants before fall cultivation takes off. Vendor Appreciation Day Winners

The people have chosen! SFC Farmers’ Market vendors work rain or shine to bring us fresh, healthy, delicious food all year. We wanted to show our market vendors just how much we appreciate all the hard work they put in to make our community (and our bellies!) happier and healthier, so we proposed a lighthearted Vendor Appreciation Day contest, giving everyone full license to show their favorite vendors just how much they’re loved. Market shoppers were asked to vote for their favorite farmers and vendors by placing a sticker right on their top picks, and winners received complimentary booth fees for the day. After counting the hundreds of votes that came in, the results were tight. And while we love them ALL, the winners for this year are…

Tomato and Watermelon Salad with Feta

Ripe, heavy, and dripping with juice: summer eating's all about the tomato. At the markets these days, you'll find all manner of lovely specimens--cherries, heirlooms, slicers, and canners. And with temperatures finally approaching summer's highs, we're loving this recipe that makes the most of their flavor and health benefits without so much as turning on the stove. Combined with other cooling powerhouse produce (think cool, crunchy cucumbers and sweet melon), balanced with the salty tang of feta cheese and brightened with fresh mint, this is a salad you'll enjoy all summer long!
