At one of the earliest SFC Farmers’ Markets (then Austin Farmers’ Market), a woman stood in line juggling two small kids and a bunch of kale. “Can you tell me how to cook this?” the harried woman asked the grower. It was instantly apparent that we couldn’t create a healthy local food system if people didn’t know what to do with the seasonal fresh ingredients produced by local farmers. It was an honor to accept the E. Lee Walker Award for Collaboration at the Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center Children in Nature Awards Dinner for our Sprouting healthy Kids Program this month.

Help foster a brighter, healthier future for children in Central Texas by teaching youth to grow their own food. Join us for a free School Garden Leadership Training, and we will teach you how to successfully start and sustain a school food garden. Training is free, but registration is required.

In October, the Double Dollar Incentive Program expands to all SFC Farmers’ Markets! The Double Dollar Incentive Program allows families and individuals who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly food stamps) and Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) fruit and vegetable benefits, to double the dollar amount that they can spend on fruits and vegetables at the East and Sunset Valley markets. Food Day is October 24th and we are celebrating with a cooking demo at the SFC Farmers’ Market at The Triangle. SNAP! Kitchen will be on hand cooking up a delicious Quinoa Stir Fry with market veggies—stop by for a taste! Find more Food Day events here.

Austin is the live music AND fresh produce capital of the world! At least we think it is, and SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown is open BOTH weekends of the Austin City Limits Music Festival (Oct 5th & 12th)! Free parking will be available. On Oct 5th at noon, we’re giving away 2 three day passes to ACL for the following weekend, but you must be present to win!

Saddle up, let’s ride! The Texas Mamma Jamma Ride raises awareness and much-needed funds for our central Texas neighbors coping with breast cancer. This collaborative event scheduled for October 26th saves and improves lives by supporting SFC, as well as nine other local nonprofit organizations providing supportive services in Central Texas. We hope you’ll consider donating or riding!

Join Urban Roots on Tues, Oct 1st for their annual Seed to Harvest celebration at Malverde to kick-off the start of their new season. Enjoy local appetizers and half price drinks as you mix and mingle with their Board of Directors, Staff, Sponsors and Youth Interns. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

Save the date for the Green Corn Fall Festival Sunday, October 27th. You won’t want to miss this gorgeous day of food, music, and community supporting an organization that educates and assists Central Texans in growing organic food gardens.
