Top 11 Reasons to Love Community Gardens

...and to support community gardening in Austin. Sustainable Food Center celebrates our 40th birthday this year. With roots as a community gardening organization, we would like to celebrate SFC’s birthday by recognizing the incredible value community gardens bring to our city. A community garden is a piece of land, either public or private, that is collaboratively managed by a group of people who use it to grow food for themselves or others. Solar Powered Eggs at Milagro Farm

At 5:00 every morning we stumble out of bed, grab our headlamps and start our days. Kris heads out to the pasture to feed our chickens, we’ve lost count at over 3,500 of them now. The low hum of the silo and the loud squawking of bellies that are begging to be fed can be heard throughout our property. Slowly the sun rises revealing all that is only seen by the ears. It all looks a little clearer now and it’s official, the day has begun. We’re farmers. Let’s face it, our lives revolve around the sun. We used to be more aware of...

Class Spotlight: Foundation Communities

One of our favorite parts of SFC’s The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre®’s community classes is the amazing groups we get to partner with when they host our classes. We just started a series at their Skyline Terrace property, and we recently finished another at their brand new Capital Studios property. Capital Studios is the first new affordable housing community built in the downtown area in over 45 years!

Good News for Raw Milk and Small Farmers From the Texas Legislature!
Our good local food bills have passed the House of Representatives! We have just a few weeks to get them through the Senate in order to become law: HB 91, which would expand legal access to raw milk by allowing licensed farmers to sell at farmers’ markets and make delivery arrangements with consumers; and HB 1900, which would provide fair property tax treatment for small farmers, vegetables farmers, and diversified farm. Will you help us keep fighting for our farmers and our food system in this final month of the session? Take Action Now »
