Three Sisters

The Three Sisters

These days, companion planting and intercropping (or polycultures) are buzz words for organic gardeners. Intercropping refers to the practice of growing two or more crops close to one another in order to produce a greater yield on a given piece of land by using resources that would otherwise not be utilized by a single crop. So, for example, gardeners might plant deep-rooted crops alongside crops with shallow roots so that plants do not compete for water and can access nutrients at different soil depths. Alternatively, gardeners might...

Summer Camps

Summer Camp with SFC's Farm Direct Program

For weeks now, the courtyard in front of the SFC office has been abuzz with the fun sounds and sights of kids participating in various summer camps. Some of these camps are visiting us for the half day Local Food Field Trips that we offer mid-June through July, while others have been participating in various summer camps hosted by our neighbors at Creative Action. SFC is very excited to be pairing up with Creative Action in a summer camp happening the first week of August which is also National Farmers’ Market Week - where we get to...

Olivia

Intern Spotlight: Olivia Cason

Olivia Cason is a rising sophomore at St. Edward’s University and is completing a summer internship with SFC as part of a partnership between St. Edward’s and H-E-B. Olivia supports our summer field trip program in which local camps bring their campers (ages 4-15) for hands-on cooking and gardening, and activities that illustrate how food gets from the farm or garden to our plates. She came to us after a semester-long project on sustainable agriculture here in Austin, where she was introduced to urban farms and first heard about SFC. Read on for her essay about why SFC’s mission is so important to her.

SFC HAPPENINGS

Fresh & New at the SFC Farmers' Market
Fresh fruits and veggies are still a highlight of all SFC Farmers' Markets, with the heat taking a bit of a toll but a strong selection and high quality still available. Of note on Saturday, the SFC Farmers' Market at Sunset Valley offers special spicy pickles from Kubena Farm and dried mushrooms, perfect for a light broth, from Logro, and meaty, flavorful San Marzano tomatoes from Hairston Creek Farm. Downtown look for a lengthy list of produce, say ‘hi’ to Swede Farms and try their goat cheeses, and sample the salves from Springfield Farms to soothe your summer skin.

At East on Tuesday afternoon, Johnson’s Backyard Garden and Margaret’s Farm are keeping the flame, while veggies from Animal Farm and meats from Richardson Farm round out the Wednesday offerings at the Triangle. Seasonal fruits and veggies at the markets will include tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, okra, eggplant, squashes, onions, potatoes, melons, and peaches. Plus find local eggs, meats, cheese, bakery goods and ready-to-eat foods, like Happy Vegan Baker that offers delightful treats at all four SFC Farmers' Markets! Read more »
