What to Plant in August

Scorching temperatures in August may be daunting, but during this toasty month, you can start preparing the ground for fall planting and also plant several fruits and vegetables for your fall season. To prepare for your fall garden, start cleaning up your current or future garden area by pulling weeds and dead plants. It’s far more motivating to start your fall garden with an area free of debris. Keep watering your existing plants and trees (preferably early in the morning), and make sure the soil around them is covered with a hefty 2-3 inch layer of mulch. Some of your existing plants may look droopy, especially during the mid-day heat, but they’ll revive themselves in the fall just like most Austinites!

SFC HAPPENINGS

Fresh & New at the SFC Farmers' Market
Its National Farmers' Market week! Show your love and support the vendors. Come out and vote for your favorite vendor at SFC Farmers' Market Downtown and SFC Farmers' Market at Sunset Valley this weekend.

Cake and Spoon's 6th anniversary at the market is this weekend. Stop by their booth and congratulate Melissa Brinkman - she may have treats to celebrate! Fresh fruits and veggies are still a highlight of all markets, with the heat taking a bit of a toll but a strong selection and high quality still available. Of note on Saturday, the SFC Farmers' Market at Sunset Valley offers special spicy pickles from Kubena Farm, popcorn and okra will be at Fruitful Hill, and flavorful San Marzano tomatoes from Hairston Creek. At the SFC Farmers' Market Downtown look for a lengthy list of produce, say ‘hi’ to Swede Farms and try their goat cheeses, and sample the salves from Springfield Farms to soothe your summer skin.
