Four grant-funded projects are being realized this year which will allow visitors to experience a greenhouse, a rain water catchment system, bee hives, and a children’s sensory garden. SFC's Farm Direct: Looking Ahead to 2016

Though just a few days in, 2016 is already proving to be a year of exciting awareness and growth throughout the world. The current calendar year has been designated the Year of Pulses by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. Additionally, the Vatican has assigned 2016 to be a Holy Year of Mercy alongside the Hebrew year 5776, a Jubilee Year. While Jubilee can take on many different understandings SFC finds resonation in the interpretation of awareness and growth. According to the Chinese Zodiac, February 2016 starts the year of the Monkey, while Pantone® announced the official 2016 colors Rose Quartz and Serenity. As we find ourselves in the midst of a Presidential Election Year for the US, monkeys and a need for mercy and serenity may be politically prominent. If you’ve read this far, you may be thinking that 2016 will be a year of obscure knowledge and trivia for SFC’s Farm Direct team. Fresh & New at SFC Farmers' Markets
Though the winter months often mean a decrease in fresh produce availability, SFC Farmers’ Markets have an abundance of fresh fruits and veggies that will cure any winter blues. At SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, stop by Engel Farms to pick up fresh strawberries that are perfect for a tasty snack or a post dinner dessert. Additionally, Capital Area Food Bank of Texas will be continuing their Fresh Food drive. Make an easy donation of produce and help feed central Texans in need. Read more »

Urban Roots is hiring youth farm interns between the ages of 14-17 for the spring and summer of 2016. This is a paid internship working on the Urban Roots farm in East Austin growing vegetables, serving the community, learning leadership and job skills, eating and cooking in healthy ways, and having fun.
