Sustainable Food Center

February marks American Heart Month, which recognizes that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. The good news is that heart disease can be prevented through healthy lifestyles and supportive environments. SFC is proud to promote heart healthy activities and education throughout its programming.

Get your heart pumping in the garden!

Gardening as a Heart-Pumping Exercise

Because we care about healthy hearts, we at SFC's Grow Local want to shine the spotlight on gardening, a fantastic activity for heart health. We are in the last stretch of our Central Texas winter, and it is time for spring planting, which means finding time for physical activity outdoors. Consider adding gardening to your weekly exercise routine, or if you already garden, learn how this activity is benefiting your body. Spending time knocking out chores in the garden brings a multitude of benefits.

Farm to Work helps your heart through local food!

Farm to Work, Mending Hearts

Sustainable Food Center is dedicated to supporting Central Texas farms and our communities that can benefit from eating their delicious, healthy, fresh products. We’ve seen the healing power of fresh fruits and vegetables in action, and know it can do much to bridge communities and heal hearts - February is American Heart Month, after all. Since 2007, SFC’s Farm to Work program has been hard at work helping folks at worksites in Austin, San Antonio, and Houston eat more local, sustainable fruits and vegetables.

But do you know how to take this good dietary advice and turn it into good choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day? It’s simple: get more involved with your food preparation!
