How One Inspired Gardener Helped Strengthen a Community

Joseph de Leon wasn’t always a gardener, but ever since he was a small child, he has understood the power gardening has to make a place feel special. “My earliest memories are of my grandmother’s awesome garden: she had roses, chickens, nopales, yerba buena. We were in the middle of the urbanized west side of San Antonio, but her yard was like an oasis.” Fast forward a couple of decades, and Joseph is a passionate gardener in his own right. His initial try at gardening--a 2x2-foot herb garden--has gradually enveloped his whole yard, so that he now lives among vegetables, fruit trees, and chickens. He became involved with the Gardens at Gus Garcia, a combination community garden and senior garden at the Gus Garcia Recreation Center, through volunteer work, and when garden leaders invited him to be a member of the...

This Week at the SFC Farmers' Markets

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Saturday from 9am-1pm:

  • That warm Texas heat is here and it doesn’t seem to be headed anywhere fast! Grab a drink from SoCo Ginger Beer this Saturday while you shop for weekly produce provisions. Make sure to check out the seasonal White Peach flavor- it won’t be here for long!
  • In the mood for some seafood? Check out Lil Emma’s Seafood for fresh gulf shrimp and calamari- perfect in tacos, pasta, or adding to your grill.

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Saturday from 9am-1pm:

  • Garlic scapes are here and you will want to grab yours from Hairston Creek Farms this Saturday as they have a short growing period. Garlic scapes are the flower bud of the garlic plant and can be used just like garlic; sautéed, roasted, and added raw to your favorite dishes.

Summer Camp with Creative Action
There are still spots available for "Tastes of Texas" summer camp, hosted in partnership between SFC and Creative Action. The camp will be held July 25-29 from 9am-4:30pm. All children ages 5 to 9 are welcome to join us as we dig into local dishes, discover what grows in our unique climate and learn the history of our favorite foods. Learn more »
