An Interview with Ricardo Cruz of El Cruz Ranch


Ricardo Cruz has worked with food since he was a boy. He grew up on a farm, one of eleven children, and it was his mother and grandmother who taught him “how to feed a lot of hungry mouths”. At El Cruz Ranch, he raises vegetables, meat and poultry, which he sells at the Downtown SFC Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and SFC Farmers’ Market at the Triangle on Wednesdays. He also operates a food trailer at the same markets. This week we spoke with him about how he got started farming and about his family tradition of making holiday tamales.

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Saturday from 9am-1pm:

  • Late Season Peppers: There are still a few surviving peppers from Tecolote Farm! Along with the peppers, there will be Kale, Swiss chard, Mustard Greens, Turnips, Cilantro, French Carrots, French Sorrel, Garlic Chives, Zucchini relish and much, much more!
  • Farmers Helping Farmers: Farm 1-1 is a great resource for beginning farmers. They have established a network of tools, equipment, expertise, and volunteer labor all to assist those farmers in need. Come learn more about their mission and how you get involved!

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Saturday from 9am-1pm:

  • Confituras: Come see what new, tasty items they will be offering. Jellies, jams, preserves, apple butter and maybe even something new!
  • Olive Oil: Texas Hill Country Olive Oil Company is new this week! They offer a wide variety of extra virgin olive oils along with traditional and fruit- infused balsamic. All their products are available mix and match or individually!
