Kids and Bees Class

Kids and Bees!? Bee-lieve It!

Anyone with young kids will tell you that jokes, especially bee jokes, are always in season. So, when 12-year old Mikaila Ulmer, CEO of Me and the Bees Lemonade, opened her speech with a joke about sushi and bees, I knew it was going to be a good day. On November 5, 2016, SFC hosted the first family-friendly beekeeping class, and it was a sold-out event. Kids ages 5 12 and their family members came out to the SFC Teaching Garden to get up close and personal with the bees in the apiary. Gathered under the pavilions and hoping that the rain would stay away, the small group of participants seemed a little unsure and nervous at first. Mikaila had some tough ice to break.

THIS WEEK AT SFC FARMERS' MARKETS

 
Holiday Market Hours: Most of our markets will open as regularly scheduled throughout the upcomings holidays. Sunset Valley will be closed on Christmas Eve, and back to regular schedule for New Year’s Eve. Downtown will host a smaller market on Christmas Eve, and will have our regular market on New Year’s Eve. Our SFC Farmers' Market at the Triangle will be open as regularly scheduled through the holidays.


SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Saturday from 9am-1pm:

  • Food Access:  Want to learn more about food access and land preservation? Bring your questions this weekend and stop by Farmshare Austin’s tent!
  • Sweet and Savory Treats: Cake and Spoon will have a variety of sweet and savory goodness! Double ginger, chocolate cherry and blackberry scones along with roasted pumpkin with caramelized red onion quiche. Come try some out!

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Saturday from 9am-1pm:

  • Winter Veggies: Visit Johnson’s Backyard Garden for all your vegetables this weekend! They will have broccoli, cabbage, carrots, watermelon radishes, cilantro, and kale - just to name a few!
  • Olive Oil: Make sure to stop by and check out one of our newest vendors! Texas Hill Country Olive Oil has award winning extra virgin olive oil amongst many other flavors, and a variety of balsamic vinegars.!

Texas Farm to School Round Up Farmer Scholarships for TOFGA 2017
We are a longtime sponsor of the annual Texas Organic Farmers and Gardeners Conference, and are proud to announce the availability of Texas Farm to School Round Up Farmer Scholarships to attend the 2017 pre-conference Farm to School workshop and the two day TOFGA Conference. As part of a USDA Farm to School Training Grant, in collaboration with Texas Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and Texas Department of Agriculture, SFC will issue up to 18 travel stipends of $150 for farmers and ranchers to attend the preconference Farm to School Workshop and full conference. Learn more»
