We live in an era when many children and adults spend less time in nature and know little about the source of their food and how to make healthy food choices. Children who spend less time outdoors suffer from what is now widely known as “nature deficit disorder,” which results in behavioral problems. What can we do to address these negative health trends? One solution that has been proven to be effective in mitigating the negative outcomes of nature deficit disorder is engaging kids in gardening at school through school gardens.

At SFC, we can attest to the array of positive benefits of learning outdoors in a school garden. Starting a school garden is exciting but can also be overwhelming! Read on to learn our 10 suggested steps to starting a school garden.

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. Aug 26th from 9am-1pm:

  • Light a Fire: Texas Food Ranch is here for you with their mix of spicy peppers: popping poblanos, tasty Thai red chiles, amorous Anaheim, hopping jalapenos and ab-fab Armenian spicy! Plus RED BELLS are ringing in the late summer. Don't be caught without some colorful flavor and remember, it’s never too late to start your summer pickling.
  • Spread the Love: Fervor Nut Butter has been making raw, soaked, dehydrated and stone ground nut butters for their family for years and now they are sharing it with the Austin community!

 
SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Sat. Aug 26th from 9am-1pm:

  • Foraged Delights: Party Fowl Farm will have limited amounts of wildcrafted Mustang Grape Jelly and Beautyberry Jelly in addition to their duck eggs, eggplant, okra and amaranth
  • All Natural: Miki Cook of Medicine Woman Herbs will be onsite with homemade tinctures made with Holy Basil, Aloe Vera based sunscreens, Gut Health Tea and a variety of healthy spice blends.

 
SFC Farmers’ Market at the Triangle, Wed. Aug 30th from 3pm-7pm:

  • Short n Sweet: Blue Earth Farms is bringing small batch local raw honey to market in the tiniest, cutest bear shaped bottles you have ever seen. As always they will have pastured pork and pastured chicken!
