Hispanic Farmer and Rancher Conference


In mid-September, SFC staff had the opportunity to attend the Hispanic Farmer and Rancher Conference: Growing Together/Creciendo Juntos held in McAllen, Texas. NCAT (National Center for Appropriate Technology) and NRCS (USDA’s Natural Resource Conservation Service) organized this first-ever conference in Texas, specifically for Hispanic agricultural producers. The conference workshops were divided into four main tracks: Urban Farming, Ranching, Farming, and On-Farm Research and Education. Topics included how to sell at farmers’ markets, grass-fed beef best practices, food safety regulations and NCRS financing among many others. SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. Sept 30th from 9am-1pm:

  • Herbal Essences: Johnson’s Backyard Garden has all the aromatics you need to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. Rosemary, thyme and sage are in now! Pair with fresh kale and scarlet turnips for a hearty soup to get you through this rainy week, or dry for later in the season. A plethora of other veggies are also available, find them at Downtown, Sunset Valley and the Triangle this week.
  • Roasted Tea:  Lost Pines Yaupon Tea will be at our Sunset Valley and Downtown markets this weekend with refillable growlers for your light roast tea or sweetened dark roast tea with lemon and basil. Buy a package of loose leaf tea to take home and get a cup for free!

  • Soothing Scents: New personal aromatherapy inhalers from Medicine Woman Herbs. These area a natural way to cope with common ailments such as hot flashes, anxiety, and more! Essential oils loaded onto organic cotton in a handy to carry pocket or purse inhaler.
  • Community Minded: Your favorite backyard gardeners, Yard to Market Co-op, are at it again bringing together the best small batch hot peppers, long beans, summer squash, arugula, chicken and duck eggs this weekend. Can’t get enough of Yard to Market? Stop by their Annual Garage Sale Fundraiser for your own garden supplies, kitchen goods, clothing, furniture and more to support this awesome organization!

Austin Fermentation Festival
The Austin Fermentation Festival is an educational event that celebrates all things fermented in Central Texas and will run from 10am  -  4:30pm on October 22nd at Barr Mansion. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Texas Farmers’ Market Farmer Emergency Fund, which offers financial assistance to TFM farmers and ranchers in times of environmental, personal or other crisis. Circle Brewing 0.5k Micro Marathon
Craft beer lovers come compete on an epic scale - all while supporting SFC - on November 4th! The 0.5K (aka running with pints) is a 1640ft race that takes place in the Circle Brewing parking lot. During each heat, every participant is given two plastic pints with a fill line and a spill line for beer, spill too much and you’re disqualified! Learn more »


The Flavor of Memory
See your food memories come to life! We have partnered with Austin Playback Theatre to present "The Flavor of Memory" on Tuesday, November 7th at 7pm at The First Universalist Church on Grover Street. This live improvisational performance features actors playing back stories elicited from the audience.
