September is a busy time for our Grow Local program! In a month filled with programming, one of the highlights was our fall Spread the Harvest Resource Giveaway Day. Spread the Harvest is a project of our Grow Local program that helps qualifying Central Texas residents, community gardens, and school gardens grow and share healthy food by providing them with free gardening resources. As part of Spread the Harvest, we hosted our Fall Resource Giveaway Day on Thursday, September 28th. SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. Oct 14th from 9am-1pm:

  • Super Snacks: Take your snacking to the next level with healthy, protein packed Wundernuggets from Sneaky Apron. Try original Rosemary Chicken, Veggie Minty Lentil, or a “Power Bowl” over local greens with your choice of dressings.
  • Get Ready to Roast: Missed Farmer Katie at the market the past two weeks? Don’t worry, Tecolote Farm is here to bring you organic veggies like arugula, red radishes, French thyme, elephant garlic and more. David will also be on site with his homegrown oak-roasted New Mex chiles, so start planning your salsas now!

 
SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Sat. Oct 14th from 9am-1pm:

  • Fresh Art: Support local by buying paintings, holiday cards and sketches from Arte Para La Vida. These pieces all tell a story, stop by to see Amanda working on her craft live at the market every week!
  • Spankin’ New:  We can’t wait to get our hands on a Cubano, Lechon Asado Grilled Cheese or Pan con Palta from Sudakas Latin Fusion. After you are done eating swing over to La Flaca for dried and fresh peppers, gourds melons and more. Hill Country Iron Provisions will be here to wow you with some wine flavored salts and spice blends. Take a minute to treat yourself right with an ashiatsu massage at Chillax Massage.

Action Alert!
Contact Attorney General Paxton and urge him to take a hard look at the merger of Bayer-Monsanto. Go to the online contact form at https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/contact-form/. In the "Request" box, choose the first option in the drop-down menu, for "I want to register my opinion." Fill in your contact information where indicated. Under "subject," put "Bayer-Monsanto merger." Tell him why you care about this issue, and ask that he step up to join the other state Attorneys General who are already part of the investigation. It takes just a couple of minutes, and it does have an impact.


Austin Fermentation Festival
The Austin Fermentation Festival is an educational event that celebrates all things fermented in Central Texas and will run from 10am  -  4:30pm on October 22nd at Barr Mansion. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Texas Farmers’ Market Farmer Emergency Fund, which offers financial assistance to TFM farmers and ranchers in times of environmental, personal or other crisis. Circle Brewing 0.5k Micro Marathon
Craft beer lovers come compete on an epic scale - all while supporting SFC - on November 4th! The 0.5K (aka running with pints) is a 1640ft race that takes place in the Circle Brewing parking lot. During each heat, every participant is given two plastic pints with a fill line and a spill line for beer, spill too much and you’re disqualified! Learn more »


NeighborWoods Tree Giveaway
TreeFolks will have just over 1,000 5-gallon sized trees to giveaway to Austin residents on October 28th our SFC Farmers' Market at Sunset Valley. The NeighborWoods program is a partnership between TreeFolks and the City of Austin to help combat Urban Heat Island Effect, reduce energy costs, and cool homes. Learn more »


The Flavor of Memory
See your food memories come to life! We have partnered with Austin Playback Theatre to present "The Flavor of Memory" on Tuesday, November 7th at 7pm at The First Universalist Church on Grover Street. This live improvisational performance features actors playing back stories elicited from the audience. The performance is free to the public, a suggested donation of $7-$15 at the door go directly to SFC. Learn more » Learn more »
