Oh My Gourd! How To Compost Your Pumpkins.


We hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween! Those big, orange pumpkins found at farms, grocery stores, and along stretches of road are really fun to carve and light this time of year. Maybe you also roasted the pumpkin seeds or made a puree from the pulp.

Whatever tasty and fun creations you made from your pumpkin, it will soon be time to retire it but please don’t send it to the landfill. When food scraps end up in a landfill, they decompose without oxygen and produce methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. Every year millions of pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills after Halloween. We have some easy ways to give this Halloween horror story a happy ending.

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. Nov. 4th from 9am-1pm:

  • New Vendor Alert: Marigold Artisanal Granola has small batches of wheat free and vegan granola baked with a light touch of maple syrup. 23 Soap Co is moving Downtown to provide all your doggo friends with some chapped paw balm, and your humans with all natural face serums and activated charcoal deoderant. If you enjoy Wunder-Pilz’s tart kombucha, refreshing popsicles and convenient Can-bucha look no further than our Downtown market this weekend. Finally, Urban Roots is coming back this weekend bringing a new crop of young farmers and big bunches of greens, arugula, turnips, radishes, summer squash and cucumbers!
  • Luscious Nuts: PEA-can, puh-CAHN or any way you say it, it’s pecan season in Central Texas! Pecan pie, pralines, liqueur, pecan cakes, pecan syrups, pecans in your salads, in your breads and tarts. Texas Food Ranch has got all the nuts you need beginning this week.

Craft beer lovers come compete on an epic scale - all while supporting SFC - on November 4th! The 0.5K (aka running with pints) is a 1640ft race that takes place in the Circle Brewing parking lot.
