Ortega Elementary's Citrus Fundraiser: Past, Present, and Future

In early 2014 Alejandra Mireles, a teacher at Ortega Elementary in East Austin, came to SFC with two questions; “Why aren’t we promoting healthful foods through school fundraisers?” and “What can we do about it?”. We put our heads together to consider school nutrition goals and SFC resources, from which the Citrus Fundraiser was born!

This is Ortega Elementary’s fourth year to partner with SFC and Dave Strohmeyer at G&S Groves in McAllen, Texas to raise much-needed school funds by selling organic Valencia Oranges. Recently, we sat down with Alejandra to discuss her experience running the Citrus Fundraiser, and where she sees it going.

SFC FARMERS' MARKET HAPPENINGS

Holiday Schedule

Both our Downtown and Sunset Valley markets are open December 16th and 30th. On December 23rd our Sunset Valley market is closed, but don't worry, you can still find your favorite Sunset Valley vendors at our Downtown location that day.

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. Dec. 16th from 9am-1pm:

  • Arrive In Style: Just in time for making the holiday party rounds, Barbara Gray Hand Sewn Leather Goods has created the perfect Bison Leather Wine Carrier! As the name implies, all of these sachets, purses and bags are made from 100% American Bison leather and hand-sewn for maximum durability and style.
  • Snow Day: The once-in-eight-years weather event may signal the end of eggplant and pepper season, but at Agua Dulce Farm the kale, lettuces and arugula are only becoming more resilient and delicious. Stop by this weekend to pick up your winter greens and chat about some unusual crops like amaranth and Japanese mustard greens.

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Sat. Dec. 16th from 9am-1pm:

  • A Sweet Thing: Come stop by Le Renard Patisserie’s booth and grab yourself a sweet treat! Chef Lauren has honed her skills in various establishments over the years, and is thrilled to bring you the fruits of her labors at our Sunset Valley market. Try some of her caramel stroopwafel cookies, blueberry cornmeal scones, or pie pockets for a sure as sugar mood lift.
  • Lettuce Rejoice: Leafy greens are in full form this weekend at Esperanza Farm’s booth! Come grab some of their butter lettuce, red lettuce, and basil to make your salads and pesto pop!
