GMOs and Consumer Choice

At Sustainable Food Center, we believe that more can be done to help educate consumers about the risks of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). We are proud to provide a trust-worthy shopping outlet to Austin consumers at our SFC Farmers' Markets, where every vendor is thoroughly audited on their growing practices before being accepted to market. To help achieve our goal of aiding in greater consumer education about food production and agriculture, we are sharing a little bit more about what is currently happening in our nation with consumer choice and GMOs.

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. Jan. 20th from 9am-1pm:

  • Humble Pie: If you've stopped by the Munkebo Farms stand lately you’ve noticed that in addition to her assortment of homegrown veggies there are pies for sale! Grab an organic blueberry pie made with preserved berries from this past summer, or a meat pot pie made with local chicken. As always an assortment of kale, collards, Romanesco cauliflower, domesticated wild boar, Piedmontese beef and veal will be available.
  • Bae Shrimp: Did you know that you can get fresh off the boat red snapper, grouper, flounder and shrimp every weekend at our Downtown market? Stop by Concha’s Salsa for some gulf seafood and a jar of salsa just like Grandma used to make.

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Sat. Jan. 20th from 9am-1pm:

  • A Different Brew: Looking for an upper that is local, sustainable, and won’t crash you out like coffee? Stop by Lost Pines Yaupon Tea for a hot cup of their premier product! Wild harvested from Bastrop, and the only caffeine source native to the US, yaupon tea is sure to please. Find some at both our Downtown and Sunset Valley markets!
  • Got Beef: Seeking something worthy of your stew? Try the wonderful offerings of Indian Hills Farm at both our Sunset Valley and Downtown markets. Cuts of beef, stock bones, and selected seasonal produce abound. Featured produce in the booth this week: Meyer Lemons, great for cocktails, fireciders, hummus, fish, or chicken soup!
