Cooking After Cancer + A Recipe!

For almost 10 years, SFC’s The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre® has offered our Cooking After Cancer class to cancer survivors and caregivers. Each class in this six-week series features a cooking demonstration and cancer-relevant nutrition information on topics such as fighting inflammation, improving digestion, and how to use herbs and spices for both flavor and symptom management.

Participants also receive the ingredients to try the in-class recipe at home. We adapted a healing and seasonal bulgur salad recipe from our favorite cancer-fighting cookbook author, Rebecca Katz’s book, One Bite at a Time. If you’re a gardener, it’s not too late to plant cucumbers, tomatoes or mint and you’ll soon see all three at SFC’s Farmers’ Markets for many months!

  • Meat and Potatoes: Peach Creek Farm has Scottish Highland beef this week in addition to their everyday porcine offerings. New this week are all beef Italian sausages as well as steaks, short ribs, and ground beef.
  • Set a Reminder: Set your alarm, tie a string around your finger or leave a post-it on your steering wheel; however you remember to bring your knives to the market this weekend for some A+ sharpening by Knife Party. Give your knives some TLC and be a happy cook all week.
  • Bánh Mì Please: If you haven’t tried one of these light and airy sandwiches filled with marinated pork, chicken or a tofu and seitan blend you are missing out! Pick up a traditional Vietnamese Bánh mì or vermicelli bowl from Saigon Le Vendeur this weekend and change your outlook on brunch forever.

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Sat. April 28th from 9am-1pm:

  • Summer Skin Prep: Get ready for the upcoming rays of sunshine with broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen from Hemp 360. Does your skin need a little love before heading out? Try a hemp oil and cocoa mud mask to rid yourself of impurities, and follow up with some famous lavender and mint raw skin lotion. Find them Downtown and at Sunset Valley this weekend.
  • Heal Thy Gut: The folks at Boulanger Fermentations have been creating healthy and traditional foods using lacto fermentation since 2010. Pick up some tangy and delicious kraut, kim chi, beet kraut or even low-temp dehydrated kraut jerky this weekend and give your mouth and gut a treat.

The Hills of Milk & Honey Farm Classroom Kickstarter
The Hills of Milk & Honey, an educational farm in Dripping Springs, needs a new air-conditioned classroom for summer camps. They offer camps, classes and tours to children and adults in order to grow future farmers and build a thriving community revolving around regenerative agriculture practices. Children enjoy becoming a farmer for a week when attending camp on the farm. However, the summer heat requires that an air-conditioned classroom space be available for rest and quiet time before heading back out into the gardens and with the livestock. Learn more »
