Eat Local!

We Challenge You to Eat Local This May!

Celebrate the most abundant season Central Texas has to offer with Sustainable Food Center’s Eat Local Challenge during the month of May! While you may be under the impression that May brings spring flowers, it also brings spring produce like peaches, tomatoes, peas, lettuces, strawberries, squash, and so much more. Which means that participating SFC’s Eat Local Challenge is not only easy, it’s also delicious and nutritious.

The Eat Local Challenge is about supporting your local farmer, your health, and the environment. You can participate at SFC Farmers’ Markets or through Farm to Work (if available at your worksite).

SFC FARMERS' MARKET HAPPENINGS

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. May 12th from 9am-1pm:

  • Millions of Peaches: It’s official peach season has started! Look no further than Lightsey Farms, on the corner of Guadalupe St. for the first peaches of the season! Get them by the bucket or just a handful to walk around the market with, however you slice it we are entering peach heaven.
  • Morning Routine: Waking up can be tough to do, but not if you stop by the new combined Marigold Granola and Lemon Tree Herbs booth this Saturday. Pick up a bag (or two) of handmade, gluten free granola chock full of berries, nuts, grains and seeds to give your day an energy boost. Then pick your potions carefully from the stock at Lemon Tree, we recommend the Ashwaganda Rose Heart Elixer to get you de-stressed and ready for your day.
  • Do you need your Mom? Look no further than the team from Mom-Demand, onsite this Saturday. Look for the ladies handing out local flowers from Animal Farm and Corona Violeta in honor of mothers everywhere and learn more about their total package in-home care company. Whether you are a single professional down with the flu, a new mother in need of extra hands around the house, or someone recovering from a minor surgery, Mom-Demand provides the best service with heart. Check them out to learn more and win some cool prizes.

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Sat. May 12th from 9am-1pm:

  • Happy Mother's Day! Medicine Woman Herbs would like to celebrate all the Mom’s out there with a lovely gift basket chock full of natural skin care balms, bath salts, organic essential oils, personal diffusers, organic herbal teas, and our special Passion Potion! Come by for one of the pre-made sets or make up your own unique blend, for your unique Momma.
  • Taste of Southwest: This weekend Yard to Market Co-op will have a huge bounty of nopales for you to grill, chop into salsa, turn into enchiladas and get a true taste of native Texas foods. Also on the table are tomatoes, herbs, lamb’s quarters and hyper-local eggs for you to chow down on.
  • Young Protégés: Check out the amazing talent from the youth in Mother Falcon Music Lab’s repertoire this Saturday at the Sunset Valley market. From cello to horns, drums and guitar, classical to modern jazz, these kids can do it all! Interested in more info for your kiddos summer camp plans? Just stop by the Mother Falcon tent all day.

The Hills of Milk & Honey Farm Classroom Kickstarter
The Hills of Milk & Honey, an educational farm in Dripping Springs, needs a new air-conditioned classroom for summer camps. They offer camps, classes and tours to children and adults in order to grow future farmers and build a thriving community revolving around regenerative agriculture practices. Children enjoy becoming a farmer for a week when attending camp on the farm. However, the summer heat requires that an air-conditioned classroom space be available for rest and quiet time before heading back out into the gardens and with the livestock. Learn more »
