Farmer Spotlight: Mary Lightsey of Lightsey Farms

Did you know that Mary Lightsey of Lightsey Farms has been a vendor at our SFC Farmers' Market Downtown for over 10 years? Located west of Waco, Mexia is a small rural town about 2.5 hours drive from Austin. A bit of a trek for us, perhaps, but between the market and Farm to Work, Mary does this drive multiple times per week with her truck stacked full of sun-ripened peaches, plums, persimmons, and other fresh goodies for sale. She grew up in Mexia on the farm she now owns - land that has been in her family for over 100 years. Learn a little bit more about Mary, and be sure to visit her this Saturday for her famous Texas peaches!

SFC FARMERS' MARKET HAPPENINGS

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. June 23rd from 9am-1pm:

  • Pretty Ripe: It’s been a long and prosperous peach season, and it isn’t over yet! Pick up your weekly allotment of peaches, along with a basket of zucchini and some sungold tomatoes from Engel Farms. This week try making a simple salad of sliced peaches, arugula and smoked pecans from Buster’s Smoked Pecans for a simple and elegant lunch.
  • You Know It When You Smell It: Every week we are reminded of the power of smell when we get a whiff of hot and fresh cheesy bread from Lua Brazil! These Pão de queijo come in traditional, pizza, basil, jalapeño or a vegan option. Take home a bag and pop a few in the oven for easy snacking all week.

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Sat. June 23rd from 9am-1pm:

  • Beans, Beans: Nourish your body this weekend with a plate from Amaranto Plant-Based Foods. Look for vegan Mac n Fleas (with chia seeds), hearty lentils, bean burgers and more. Wash it all down with the newest flavor of Can-bucha- prickly pear, lemon and ginger, from our friends at Wunderpilz.
  • The Magical Fruit: Stop by Yard to Market for some of their delicious peaches this Saturday! Other delicious offerings on the table includes their mouthwatering cherry tomatoes, their delectable herbs, and duck & chicken eggs.
