Back to School with Healthy Lunches!


September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Childhood obesity can have a lifelong impact on physical and mental health and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 5 school age children in the US is obese. While obesity is not caused by diet alone, daily access to healthy foods and modeling healthy eating habits can have a big influence in preventing, managing and reversing it.

This week, we've got some tips and recommendations to help you plan affordable, healthy lunches and snacks for your whole family. The Happy Kitchen’s Happy Plate emphasizes meals that are made up of one quarter grains, one quarter protein, and one half fruits and vegetables. These tips also work for people of all ages who are looking to start or maintain a healthy lunch routine.

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. Sept 22nd from 9am-1pm:

  • Fall Fest: Head to Sunset Valley this weekend for our 2nd Annual Fall Fest! Headlining the festivities are Frederico Geib and his full band playing Brazilian soul and funk to get you in the mood to groove. Swing by our Taste the Place booth for a look inside the traditional three sisters featuring dishes made with corn, beans and squash. Drop the kiddos off for pumpkin painting and then get your picture taken with your fine art at the free photobooth!
  • Health and Wellness: Join Pilar Leoni on her healing journey at Aroma Secrets. She offers a mix of essential oils and creams that have powerful healing potential and can be used to improve people’s general wellbeing. Try the new DIY essential oil kit, an excellent resource to start your own personal wellness journey.
