Lapsed Farm Bill Hurts Central Texas Farmers and Low-income Families

The deadline for Congress to renew the Farm Bill has come and gone. Every additional day they delay in passing a new one is a day without funding for critical programs. Earlier this week, our Deputy Director, Joy Casnovsky, spoke with the Union of Concerned Scientists about how federally-funded programs in the farm bill have helped make a difference in communities throughout Texas, and what’s now at stake.

THIS WEEK AT THE SFC FARMERS' MARKETS

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. Oct. 6th from 9am-1pm:

  • New Vendor Alert! Better Provisions is bringing ancient and heritage grains to the home cook with their baking mixes. Made with flour sourced through Barton Springs Mill, pick up a bag of pancake, cookie or scone mix this Saturday. We are also excited to invite Zahavah Jewelry to the Downtown market this weekend! Michelle Laviolette creates custom sterling, gold and bronze filled pieces inspired by her love of nature and architecture.
  • Early Bird: Make sure to head to the markets early this weekend for a handful of bunches of asparagus from Texas Food Ranch! If you missed out on these tender stalks, grab a handful of pickling cucumbers, a smattering of baby eggplant or a rainbow of sweet and hot peppers for dinner this week.
  • For the Kids: Head to the deck this weekend and you might be able to catch a performance by Austin’s youngest soloists, the students from Songbird Rising! The troupe is stopping by once again to captivate audiences with their pint-sized talent. From 9-10:30am!

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Sat. Oct. 6th from 9am-1pm:

  • New Vendor Alert! Madhu Chocolate was founded with the hope of bringing the beautiful, elegant flavor of Indian spices to the masses through their rich bars of chocolate. Stop by to gaze at the beautiful packaging, then pick up a bar of masala chai, rose pistachio or saffron milk chocolate for later. Lea Smith Designs will also be starting at Sunset Valley this weekend and will bring her abstract and geometric jewelry. All pieces are handmade, beautifully imperfect and inspired by the city of Austin..
  • Get Aligned: Sunset Valley is all about wellness this weekend! First drop in for a session with ATX Sound Balancing to correct any imbalances in your energy field. Then head to Chillax Massage for a quick Ashiatsu massage to work out any additional kinks. Meanwhile, you can drop the kiddos at Bliss Kid Yoga for free classes at 10am and 11am!
