Celebrate Food Day with 9 Steps to Reduce Food Waste

Tuesday, October 16 was World Food Day, a day created to honor the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945! This year’s theme is dedicated to making the world a #ZeroHunger place by 2030, and reducing food waste is a great step we can all take to reach that goal!

THIS WEEK AT THE SFC FARMERS' MARKETS

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown, Sat. Oct. 20th from 9am-1pm:

  • Inside and Out: Springfield Farm will have baby kale, fresh bunches of arugula, and delicate French breakfast radishes on the table this Saturday. Pick up your salad ingredients and a tub of salve to keep you feeling good and smelling better!
  • Perfect Pockets: The empanadas from Yapa Empanadas are the perfect handheld market snack. Try the very Texan brisket BBQ, the Peruvian chicken, or keep it light with a spinach, goat cheese and pecan flavor.
  • Ride Local: Stop by the Ride Austin tent to learn about this homegrown ridesharing option that is perfect for your next night out. Proceeds from every ride benefit local non-profits (including Sustainable Food Center!)

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, Sat. Oct. 20th from 9am-1pm:

  • Crispy Crunchy: These cooler temps usher in all new veggies; among them are fresh Easter egg radishes from Hairston Creek Farm. You can also catch the last of some summer veggies like purple hull peas, poblano and shishito peppers, red onions, and butternut squash.
  • Hot n Fresh: Nothing beats a homemade sticky bun to go with your morning coffee, so head over to Feel Butter Baby to stock up on these pillowy pastries. Try the pecan sticky bun, classic iced, or lean into this fall weather and grab a pumpkin spice!
  • Demo Time! Wondering how to put all these fresh veggies and meats to use this week? Plan to be at the market at 10:30 this Saturday for our Thai Curry Cooking Demo, with Nitya of Yard to Market! She will teach you how to make a classic curry dish and send you on your way with a spice paste and materials to make the dish at home!
  • Never Too Early: Start your Thanksgiving prep early by pre-ordering your Turkey from one of our favorite ranchers! Stop by Smith Farm, Belle Vie Farm and Kitchen, Richardson’s Farm, or Party Fowl Farm to order your bird.
