WIC at the Markets

What A Year for the Farmers' Market Nutrition Program!

As November has come and passed, so too has another season for the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). FMNP is a seasonal program that SFC runs in collaboration with the Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas WIC.

Each year, from April to October, families who participate in WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) can receive a set of vouchers to purchase fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables from Texas farmers. We match those vouchers through SFC Double Dollars so that families can purchase even more locally grown, fresh fruits and vegetables! And this year was a bigger success than ever before! THIS WEEKEND AT THE MARKETS  -  SAT, DEC 15, 2018

SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown:

  • A Second Home for Urban Roots: Tomorrow is the last farm stand of the season for Urban Roots at the Downtown market! They’ll be focusing their efforts towards spring and organizing about moving onto their new second campus. Grab the beautiful carrots, turnips, rosemary, and cilantro from this weekend or wait until April for their triumphant spring reemergence!
  • Gifts and Produce and Produce-Gifts: You may know them for their produce but have you checked out what else Hi Fi Mycology and Reverse Pioneers have on the table? Adding to the to the oyster, lions mane, and chestnut, and other mushrooms you know and love, Hi Fi is bringing mushroom ornaments and decorations to market: mounted shrooms, hanging fungi ornaments, and more! Reverse Pioneers has handcrafted wooden cutting boards in addition to the sunflower microgreens you know and love.
  • Stocking Stuffers: Make sure to pick up the little things that are going to make your holiday that much more special, like crunchy Kakawa beans from Cocoa Puro. For the tea lover in your life consider giving Siply’s Jasmine Matcha Kit. Prefer something shinier? New vendor Lea Smith Designs has handmade earrings and necklaces in delicate natural patterns perfect for the special someone in your life.

SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley:

  • Hostess Gift: Have you been invited to a lot of holiday parties this year? Consider bringing a jam jar from Party Fowl Farm to say thanks. Jams come in flavors like mustang grape and hibiscus, and pair great with the cheeses from our new vendor Lira Rossa. Lira Rossa will be featuring their smoked ricotta, classic Italian latteria, and mozzarella, grab some from them early before it’s all gone!
  • Local Goods and Foods: Stop by Le Renard and Boulanger Fermentations this weekend to get some of the best of the market, baked and preserved and imminently giftable. Le Renard’s sweets use farmers’ goods such as Richardson’s eggs and milk, Party Fowl’s pumpkins and pecans, and more! Nab a stroopwafel cookie for yourself and check out Chef Lauren’s gift baskets for those who’ve earned it. This weekend will be the last of Boulanger’s for a while in order for them to focus on getting their new kitchen space built, so stock up on all the jars of Beetnik (beet sauerkraut) and Kare (curry sauerkraut) this Saturday.
