5 Black-led Food Systems Organizations You Should Know

As part of our commitment to promoting equity in the food system and in honor of Black History Month, we’re highlighting Black-led companies and organizations working to make the local food movement in Central Texas a more racially inclusive space. Leaders from Dobbin-Kauv Farm, Green Thumb Farming, Inter-Generational Gardening Soul to Soul, The Rooted in Melanin Initiative, and Texas Small Farmers & Ranchers Community Based Organization generously shared their time and experience to help us learn more about their work and how we can all support their missions.

THIS WEEKEND AT THE MARKETS
Highlights, Vendors, Events and more. Downtown and Sunset Valley - Sat. Feb 13

DOWNTOWN: It’s gonna be chilly this weekend, but it’s nothing a steaming hot cup of soup from Belle Vie Farm and Kitchen can’t cure! While you are shopping for freshly made pork sausages and packs of duck breast, be sure to pick up a pork and lentil soup to warm your bones on the drive home. Once you’ve filled up on meat, head to Lemon Tree Herbs for just mixed tea blends. Milky oats, mullein, lavender and more all sourced locally (from former market farmer Herban Austin) are blended for heart-centered, mineral rich, hormone balancing teas. Also offered are sprays, tinctures, and potions to keep you healthy and adjusted all winter.

SUNSET VALLEY: Teximo Comfort Foods serves locally smoked salmon in flavors you’ll have to try to believe. This wild-caught salmon is house made in original, zydeco (cajun-ish), and kangnam style (Korean barbecue influenced). Perfect for making brunch at home on a blustery weekend morning or giving as a gift to the ones you love. Speaking of warming up don’t forget to pick up a cup of coffee (or cocoa) from Texas Coffee Traders! We prefer the market blend (obviously) but you can try a few and take home a pound of beans to power you through your entire week.

To keep our vendors, staff and customers safe, we request everyone wear a face covering or mask while in the market area. Click here to learn more about our safety measures. SFC Farmers' Market match SNAP, WIC and FMNP benefits with Double Up Food Bucks! Visit our website for more information on which vendors will be at market, what products are in season, and more.
