How Double Up Food Bucks is Keeping Texas Healthy

Low-income communities of color are most impacted by a widening inequity gap. In 2019, in Texas, 30% of households with children were food insecure. Before COVID-19, 1 in 7 Texans experienced food insecurity. The number of food-insecure households has risen significantly in the wake of COVID-19.

To address inequity in access to healthy food, SFC is working in partnership with organizations across the state to launch and support SNAP incentive programs like Double Up Food Bucks at their local farmers’ markets and grocery stores. Today, we’re excited to share the ways in which we’re deepening engagement and expanding the program to communities across Texas.

THIS WEEKEND AT THE MARKETS
Highlights, Vendors, Events and more. Downtown and Sunset Valley - Sat. May 15

Welcome and please enjoy either of our two markets this Saturday, 9AM to 1PM: Sunset Valley, located just across from the Toney Burger Center, at Sunset Valley Elementary, and Downtown Austin at Republic Square.

Downtown: As you walk up towards Mercado Sin Nombre, you will see their artisan, warm and delicious tortillas being made fresh on site. Not only do they encompass the small-batch, freedom in creativity, and one-off mentality of their company, but they highlight the ingredients, origins, and traditions of the products they make. And fill those tortillas with eggs from Milagro Farm. Their eggs sell quickly for a reason as per one testimonial from Texas Real Food: “The yolks are glorious rich orangy, yellow, and the flavor is amazing.” And stop by Munkebo Farm to find their assortment of veggies and meats including grass-fed beef and pasture-raised hogs.

Sunset Valley: If you are looking for some of the freshest and bursting with flavor meats, look no further than Richardson Farm. Their weekly assortment includes grass-fed beef, hogs, and pasture-raised chickens all their offerings make any meal special. And treat yourself and friends to Le Renard Patisserie where you’ll come across some of the most delicious works of art in their pastries, cakes, and jams, all made with seasonal and local ingredients. Finally, don’t forget about your four-legged friends. Chow Hound uses only quality proteins, vegetables, and fruits for all their premium raw dog food and treats.

To keep our vendors, staff and customers safe, we request everyone wear a face covering or mask while in the market area. Click here to learn more about our safety measures. SFC Farmers' Market match SNAP, WIC and FMNP benefits with Double Up Food Bucks! Visit our website for more information on which vendors will be at market, what products are in season, and more.
