How We Verify the Environmental Impact and Viability of Small Farms
 
Early enough to beat the heat of the day, SFC staff arrives at a nearby mixed vegetable farm, donning boots, hats, and clipboards. This is a very familiar routine for the Farm Viability team at SFC. Since 2018, our Farm Viability staff have committed to biannually visiting every farm in our network as part of a new project called Sustainability Impact Statements.

Through this project, we are working to better understand the unique environmental factors that influence the viability of our local farms and ranches. Over the past three years doing this work, we’ve gotten to see these farms grow and change, some shifting dramatically while others plug away at small improvements.

It’s another week of markets and delicious options to choose from. Find the SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley at the Toney Burger Center, or Downtown at Republic Square; both markets run Saturday, 9 AM to 1 PM.

Downtown: Bringing the flavors of Tabasco, Mexico to downtown Austin, La Masa Tabasquena shares their love for the traditional foods of Mexico. This small family-owned business takes great pride in the essential ingredient to Mexican cuisine, the masa. Try their delicious assortment of tamalitos including gluten and vegetarian options. Make sure and stop by and visit Mama Noy's Kitchen, one of the newest vendors to the market. They serve home-style Laotian dishes, Tex-Mex inspired Asian tacos, and delicious Asian fusion entrees with a twist to surely please your palate. Kitchen Pride Mushroom Farms specializes in high-quality, white, brown, sliced, and other specialty mushrooms and are a great stop to add for your gourmet weekend meals.

Sunset Valley: For some of the best Fredericksburg peaches, visit Engel Farms. It’s peach season so those mouth-watering peaches await! Plus, they’ll also have their delicious blueberries and plums for sweet desserts and morning salads. Eve's Arabic Sweets & More offers a wonderful assortment of Arabic baked goods including Haressa, a sweet cornbread covered in syrup. Plus delicious orange and carrot cakes and banana chocolate chip bread and other desserts to choose from. With some of the finest Texas pepper jelly around and over 39 flavors to choose from, stop by and visit with Brian from Left Hand Jelly. He will walk you through his assortment of sweet, savory, and other varieties of jellies to compliment any meal.
