SFC and UT Collaborate
in Community Engagement Project

UT Social Work Students

In preparation for the move to our new home in May, SFC had a chance to work with UT Social Work Masters students on a recent community engagement project. This is a great example of how educational institutions and non-profit organizations can collaborate!

Become a Citizen Gardener this Spring!

The days are getting longer, which means it’s time to get out in the garden to plant some cool season crops! Veggies like beets, carrots, and peas can be seeded directly into the ground now, and it’s also a good time to plant seedlings like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and more. As always, Grow Local recommends consulting the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Vegetable Garden Planting Guide for guidelines on what to plant when. If you’re seeking great hands-on gardening instruction to help you navigate growing food in central Texas, look no further! Claim your spot in an upcoming Citizen Gardener series this spring (the next one starts January 26th) to learn how to get growing and to assist fellow Austinites in growing delicious, local produce!

Volunteer Spotlight

DahliaDahlia Ture encompasses the best definition of a volunteer: dedicated, enthusiastic, hard-working, thoughtful, sincere, and passionate about sustainable food. Her first volunteer shift at the SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, two years ago, quickly turned into a permanent gig as a member of SFC’s Market Corps, the wonderful group planning those fantastic events at the farmers’ markets. Within months, Dahlia became the first Market Corps Intern, spending up to 20 hours each week in the office and at the markets for a year.
