With creative guidance from edible landscape designer Yard to Table Gardens and construction help from dedicated volunteers like you, Grow Local will bring the JP’s Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation Teaching Garden to life in time for a fall planting this year! The teaching garden will showcase ways to garden successfully and sustainably in Central Texas’ hot, dry climate and will serve as a setting for field trips, tours, and classes hosted by SFC and our community partners. Do you want to take part in the creation of this garden? We’re laying down cardboard, stacking up limestone bricks, nourishing the soil with compost tea, building kid-friendly features, and contributing ideas for some really special “Community Vision” benches together! Join us Fridays: July 19th and August 2nd or Saturday, September 7th from 8:00-11:30am. RSVP with Rebecca Saltsman at rebecca@sustainablefoodcenter.org. See you there!

The Triangle Fountain Returns!

Triangle Fountain

The SFC Farmers’ Market at the Triangle (corner of 46th street and Triangle Blvd., between Lamar and Guadalupe) has re-introduced the children’s water fountain play area, thanks to our hosts, Cencor Realty. It is time to bring the kids on down Wednesday afternoons to shop for fresh and local fruits and vegetables, eggs, meats, honey, and more! Enjoy the sitting wall in the shade while listening to live music and watching your little ones cavort in the water. Open every Wednesday, 3 pm to 7 pm.

Farm to Work Expands!
Farm to Work is now in 4 Texas cities! In addition to worksites in Austin and San Antonio, we now have active worksites in Waco and Houston. We delivered 36 farm fresh baskets of produce to the City of Waco employees on July 12th and we are launching our first delivery to the Department of Health and Human Services in Houston on July 18th!

Molly's Skillet Pizza
Skillet PizzaSince moving into our new building in June, The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre® (THK) has been busy organizing the teaching kitchen, revising curricula and testing recipes—all in preparation for a busy fall FULL of cooking classes! Molly Costigan, who has served as an AmeriCorps VISTA Community Health Organizer with SFC for the past two years will be joining THK in August as a Coordinator. One of the recipes we hope to incorporate into our repertoire is Molly’s version of the skillet pizza. READ MORE→

Urban Farm Code: What's the Latest?
The feds aren’t the only ones riled up by farm policy these days (for more on the US Farm Bill, visit this link). This spring, the city’s Planning Commission charged the Sustainable Food Policy Board with developing recommendations to update Austin’s urban farm code. Want to learn more about the debate?
